Tucked away along the rugged Royal Arch Loop trail is Elves Chasm, an enchanting waterfall that cascades down moss-covered rocks into a magnificent emerald grotto. While it’s not the easiest of treks, the end destination makes this truly worth the hike.

A trip to this hidden gem is one for experienced canyon hikers, as the Royal Arch Loop is a challenging and remote trail in the Grand Canyon. In fact, the Royal Arch Loop is considered to be one of the most difficult of the established hikes in the park, according to the National Parks Service.

If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll take a small detour downriver for 1.5 miles of rocky terrain to Royal Arch Canyon. Once you arrive at Elves Chasm, taking a dip in the cool blue water is a welcome reward after a strenuous hike.

Before you go, be sure to obtain a backcountry camping permit from Grand Canyon National Park and reference the National Park Service’s description of the Royal Arch Loop route prior to beginning your journey. Remember to leave no trace and help preserve the beauty of Arizona’s natural wonders.
