The town of Wimberley is truly a Texas treasure. Anyone from the shopper to the outdoorsmen will find something to enjoy in this quaint and quiet Texas town. Located in the middle of Texas Hill Country, and often referred to as the Hill Country’s “Little Bit of Heaven,” Wimberley is the perfect place to stop (or stay!) when traveling between Austin and San Antonio.
There are a number of attractions that draw people to Wimberley from zipline excursions to market shopping to some of Texas’ best watering holes. It’s a good idea to spend a weekend or couple days here because, although it’s a small town, it does have a lot to offer.
For the majority of the year, Wimberley hosts Wimberley Market Days. This is truly when Wimberley square comes alive with over 475 handmade and antique vendors. Wimberley Market Days is the oldest outdoor market in the state of Texas and has grown to become the second largest in the entire state. The market has definitely put Wimberley on the map. But don’t be disappointed if you aren’t coming on a market day. There are still a number of brick-and-mortar shops and stores that offer wonderful and unique shopping options.
After a long day of shopping, a glass of wine from Wimberley’s local vineyards may be just the perfect way to unwind. There are actually a number of wineries near Wimberley, so a lack of options will not be a problem. If the Texas heat is getting you down, cool off with a wine slushie from Wimberley Valley Winery. Or take a short drive out to Duchman Family Winery, known to be one of the most scenic wineries in the area.
Now Wimberley isn’t all about wine and shopping. Outdoor lovers will enjoy the number of scenic locations and swimming holes in the area. Take a short walk up Old Baldy, a 218-stone step overlook that grants hikers views of the Texas Hill Country. However the most talked about natural wonders in Wimberley are the swimming holes Blue Hole and Jacob’s Well. Jacob’s Well is a deep underwater cave, the second biggest in Texas actually, that is covered by clear water and descends vertically down about 30 feet. It truly is a site to see. On the other hand, Blue Hole is also a stunning swimming spot with pristine water and a large grassy lawn for lounging.
No matter why you decide to visit Wimberley, whether it be for a day trip or a weekend getaway, this Texas town is sure to instill an appreciation for Texas’ Hill Country.
